Sponsor my ride

February 6, 2007

I just registered to take part in the 2007 Melbourne Summer Cycle — a 30km 0r 45km jaunt around the inner city, and over the westgate bridge.  If any melbourne bloggers want to join me that’d be great … perhaps we could enter a team?  Let me know and I’ll hook it up.

I have committed to raise $200.00 in support of those affected by Multiple Sclerosis, so I am asking for the blogging community’s help!

Check out my online fundraising page and help me reach my goal. It is easy and will take no time at all, just donate online via your credit card by clicking on the link above.

All information is secure and all donations will be sent electronically to Multiple Sclerosis NSW/VIC.  A tax deductible receipt will be sent to your Inbox once the donation is verified.

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system affecting more young adult Australians than any other neurological condition. Your donation will go towards providing a wide range of equipment, support and services to those people affected by this horrible disease.

Thanks in advance for your support … it’s greatly appreciated.

Amy’s Ride — It’s a Wrap

January 8, 2007

Well, my first foray into a cycling event, and the pin was pulled by the organisers half way through!

I am bitterly disappointed not to have completed the whole 45km, I was so psyched to achieve that milestone. I was well on the way and feeling good (aside from a slightly sore rump) at the halfway mark when the organisers were forced cancel the event due to bad weather.

The wind–bought by storms approaching from the west–had blown down all of the guard railing and advertising banners were strewn across the circuit. Obviously the organisers were concerned about liability and for the safety of the riders and really had no other choice but to ask riders to stop and call it quits for the day.

It was definitely blowing a gale. On the downhill section of the circuit we were cruising at a speed of around 40km/hr for the first couple of laps, but by the last lap, I was struggling to push to 20km/hr into the headwind. The wind going across the front of the bike was also making it difficult to steer in the upper section of the circuit.

At least I made it half way — 22.5km or 9 laps of the 2.5km circuit – before they stopped riders from continuing. That’s some consolation I guess. I also enjoyed riding with Tony and catching up, so another win there. Ah, despite being disappointed, I still had fun!

The ride itself seemed well organised enough, although there was not nearly as many people there as I expected. Apparently there were 2,000 riders on the 120km and the 70/40km trail rides though.

I forgot the camera, so no really good shots at all unfortunately. A couple of really bad shots taken with a mobile phone are all I managed. Oh well, there’s always next time.

Ride Time: 1:06:47
Avg Speed: 20.65km/hr
Max Speed: 47.4km/hr
Total Distance: 22.5km
Number of Laps: 9

Ride on

December 21, 2006

I’ve entered my first organised bike ride event — Amy’s Ride — on 06-Jan-2007 at Geelong. Should be lots of fun and it’s a good cause too: which is to raise awareness of road safety and to promote an understandstanding between cyclists and drivers on our roads. I’m planning on doing the 45km curcuit ride. A sign of things to come in 2007.
If there are any other melbourne/geelong bloggers planning to ride and would like to hook up and ride together and perhaps chew the blog fat–amongst other things–while we ride, ping me before hand.

Wish me luck.

Creative Mind at Work

August 29, 2006

JasonI know, I’ve been quiet. I’ve been meaning to write this post for a week, but just never got to it.

This time last week I attended a breakfast seminar run by my local (Banyule) Council. The keynote speaker Jason Clark, is the founder of Minds at Work, who–according to the promo–are a commercial collective of professional thinkers hell bent on changing the world!

An engaging, entertaining and interesting talk, Jason focused on how to harness and encourage creativity in the workplace, and used audience participation to facilitate and lead the discussion. Personally, I would have liked him to spend more time talking, introducing concepts and discussing his experience, whilst spending less time on the group activities. However, I would recommend that if you get the chance to attend one of his seminars that you take it, even if it is just to get out of routine for a day.

You never know, you just might learn something!
