golfinmelbourne.com

December 21, 2005

For the second time in two months, I’m launching a new blog site. My latest project is golfinmelbourne.com, a collaboration with a long-time friend Cary who is a passionate and mad, keen golfer. We’re planning on developing and supporting a community here and providing great content including a guide to finding the best courses in Melbourne, a photo gallery and all kinds of reviews, stories and annecdotes. So, if you’re into golf — drop in any time — we’d love to hear from you!

Performancing

December 21, 2005

There’s a bit of hype around the blogosphere today about Performancing. These guys have release a Firefox plugin for split screen editing.  I’m using this feature as I type … and my first impression is that it rocks!  I’m off to check out all the features, I recommend you do the same.

Yet another reason to use Firefox (not that I need one!).

IE for Mac no more!

December 19, 2005

Not that I’ve EVER used it, but according to this Microsoft site

Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and will provide no further security or performance updates.
Additionally, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download

I can’t help but wonder what this will mean for Mac support from all those banks, telcos and govt departments who have been developing to MS ’standards’ for years?

Black Belt Exam redux

December 19, 2005

As part of my 2nd Pum/1st Dan grading I had to write another written assessment on the topic: What is the most important thing Taekwondo has taught me. Here’s what I wrote …

Taekwondo has taught me a number of things. One significant insight I’ve learnt (or reinforced) is persistence. When I first started doing taekwondo, there were many others starting off. Everyone was a little apprehensive. Some seemed like naturals and looked really good after just a few classes, others (like me) were still feeling a little bit silly and awkward. However, as time passed and gradings went by, I felt less and less clumsy and started to find me feet, but I also noticed the class size getting smaller and smaller.

By the time I did my black-belt grading there were only two of us left from that original group. Both of us achieved something the others did not — we both reached our goals to become black belts. We did so not because we were the best, or smartest, or got distinction marks, but because we stuck with it, made sacrifices and persisted until we achieved our aim.

I think this is an important lesson in life, and no matter what the goal, whether it be your black belt, a University degree or some other pursuit, to achieve your goals you have to make a personal commitment and be willing to make sacrifices. And above all you have persist, even in the face of adversity or your own doubts and fears.
